MCU Based Energy Saving Lighting System With Wireless Connectivity

ZAURA™ is a wireless MCU based platform, for wireless connectivity and control for lighting systems, in offices, schools, factories and other facilities. Lighting is a major energy consumption worldwide, and it has been an economical and environmental goal, to reduce and eliminate wasted energy. The technology dims the lights based on ambient light, and turns off the light when the space is vacated.

IXYS and Zilog, being major players in the power management and energy efficiency market place, collaborated in developing ZAURA™, specifically for lighting. The first step in this initiative has been, providing an occupancy based lighting control for the large installed base of Fluoroscent lights (“FL”) in the market worldwide. Zilog integrated motion based occupancy sensors, to control the FL via the starter, that is common in Europe, Middle East and Asia.

“By creating ‘smart’starters’ with the Zilog MCU, and IXYS power MOSFET, the starter, extinguishes the FL, turning it off, when it senses an empty space. This has been quite a challenge to master this unique technology, of software, hardware and high voltage circuitry. We did it for FL systems, which enables lights above certain areas, like cubicals, to be turned off when nobody is in there. The ZAURA™ platform can be readily used for all lighting technology, including LED based lights”, commented Dr. Nathan Zommer CEO of IXYS.

The same Zilog is introducing its new ZAURA RF Lighting System which operates in the 868 MHz ISM bands designed for European frequencies. ZAURATM intelligent lighting system connects the existing fluorescent lighting “FL” fixtures wirelessly with sensors then detects occupancy presence along with levels of available daylight. The result is that lighting will only be activated when necessary; this results in immediate energy saving efficiency along with incredibility easy installation for existing FL systems.

ZAURA™ RF Lighting System was developed for buildings like schools and high occupancy areas for an intelligent energy saving lighting system. The system consists of a main sensing system and operates wirelessly communicating to each individual lighting fixture. Zaura also detects the level of natural daylight in the room and when there is sufficient daylight detected the Zaura system can either dim lighting as needed, or in turning off certain light fixtures automatically when the specified light levels are detected. Zilog is currently working with customers in the Netherlands installing this new lighting systems into multiple local schools currently where they that will see reduced energy consumption for lights.
